The technology also allows for real-time monitoring and reporting of service levels, as well as energy use and carbon emissions for ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) reporting.

The carbon saving of 650 metric tonnes each year is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 530 petrol-powered cars for one year, or over six million miles (9.65 million kilometres) driven by an average petrol-powered car. It is also equivalent to the Carbon Dioxide emissions from 464 average homes’ electricity use for one year.

dnata’s Singapore facilities were already benefitting from sustainable technology through the use of a rooftop power plant which comprises of 6,500 individual solar panels, generating over 4,300 megawatt hours of green power each year. This enabled dnata to reduce its electricity-related carbon emissions by 20%. The energy savings achieved by the new cooling systems is the equivalent to installing an additional 2,400 rooftop solar panels.

Charles Galloway, dnata’s Regional CEO, Airport Operations – Asia Pacific, said: “We are proud to be an early pioneer in low-GWP refrigerant, and making our Singapore operations even more efficient and sustainable. We have plans to expand our CaaS initiatives to additional areas of our operations, and look forward to working with our partners to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

Justin Taylor, Chief Executive Officer, Kaer, added: “We are excited to welcome dnata into the CaaS movement and to be a part of their journey towards carbon neutrality. The company’s recent key initiatives include continued significant investment in infrastructure, green ground support solutions and process improvement.

In June 2022, dnata announced that it would invest US$100 million in green operations in two years to further enhance its global environmental efficiency globally.

Steve Allen, CEO of dnata Group, said: “We are proud to have made significant progress on improving our environmental performance since the announcement of our strategic objectives. I thank each member of our team for their hard work and contribution to our green initiatives that help us make a difference across our global operations.

“We will continue our investments and efforts alongside our partners to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

Investing in renewable energy

As part of its efforts to further improve global resource efficiency, dnata has continued to make significant investments in renewable energy. This includes the installation of rooftop solar power systems across its existing facilities.

dnata has installed solar panels at its operating facilities in Singapore, and at its SnapFresh facility in Australia. These generate over 4,300 MWh of renewable electricity annually, saving approximately 1.85 million kilogrammes of carbon dioxide emissions. Phase 1 of a solar PV panel installation in Pakistan also commenced, which is expected to generate 244,000 kWh per annum. Furthermore, all electricity purchased in the UK and Ireland is from renewables from local grids.

Conserving water

In addition to solar power, dnata is investing in systems to collect and re-use condensate from air conditioning units and rainwater at both of its existing and new facilities. These initiatives optimise water usage and associated costs.

dnata’s new 20,000m2 cargo facility in Iraq, which will begin operations in 2024, will include environmentally sustainable features including a rooftop rainwater harvesting system. This will capture, treat and store rainwater in underground tanks, feeding irrigation systems within the facility as well as for potable uses, achieving a 50% saving on water costs by 2025. The system has also been configured in the Philippines using the same technology, but to collect and recycle rainwater for drinking and washing purposes. This technology will also shortly be implemented at dnata’s Singapore facilities.

With the UAE’s dry climate, dnata has installed a Reverse Osmosis Plant to re-use condensate water from the cooling systems in its cargo warehouses in Dubai. This has resulted in 5,000 litres of water per day being reused for washing and cleaning.

dnata also launched a bottle-free drinking water system at its Corporate Headquarters, dnata Travel Centre and Alpha catering facilities, which will reduce plastic consumption and conserve over 95,000 litres of bottled water per year.

Transforming GSE fleet and using biofuels

dnata continues to invest in the electrification of its ground handling fleet, and the use of biofuels where feasible, to reduce emissions. More than 15% of the company’s global fleet is now electrified. dnata is continuing to support its global airport partners to prepare the infrastructure for further electrification.

dnata understands that electrification is not the only solution to its ground handling fleet strategy. It carefully considers airports’ climatic conditions and available infrastructure, and invests in a mix of equipment types, including biodiesel, electric, hydrogen and hybrid to maximise environmental and operational efficiency globally.

As part of the crucial role that it plays during busy winter operations in Switzerland, dnata added five new hybrid de-icing trucks to its ground support equipment (GSE) fleet in 2022. This increased the number of electric GSE in its operations in the country to 35%. In The Netherlands, dnata switched to 100% biofuel for all its legacy GSE fleet in January 2023, marking another milestone in its sustainable journey in Amsterdam, where 55% of its fleet is electric.

Reducing waste to landfill

In order to reduce its carbon footprint in ways other than emissions, dnata is determined to reduce waste to landfill, and is collaborating with industry leaders and policymakers on the treatment of international catering waste. In close co-ordination with the airport community to enhance the segregation and retrieval of recyclables airside, dnata is targeting a 20% diversion of waste from landfill by 2024. In addition, dnata is investing in sustainable solutions for cargo waste materials, such as transport belts and nets that are currently destined for landfill.

dnata Catering’s retail division is also working closely with its airline partners, introducing the pre-ordering of passenger inflight meals. This cuts significant food wastage, and therefore the need for airlines to burn larger quantities of fuel to transport heavier aircraft, reducing emissions.

IATA’s IEnvA Programme

In December 2022, dnata signed up to the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) programme, based on globally recognised environmental and sustainability standards, as well as industry best practices. It is a commitment to continually improve environmental sustainability within the aviation field and is focused specifically on dnata’s core operations. These include cargo handling facilities, catering, freight forwarders, and ramp handlers. dnata is working towards full certification prior to the end of 2023.

United Nations Global Impact

dnata also joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), a voluntary global initiative that promotes responsible business practices, and the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals. dnata has committed to implement the Ten Principles of the UNGC in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. dnata will benefit from access to the UNGC’s extensive tools and resources to engage with its employees across the globe and improve their learning and training in Sustainability.

dnata is a leading global air and travel services provider. Established in 1959, the company offers quality and safe ground handling, cargo, travel, catering and retail services in 38 countries across six continents. In the financial year 2022-23, dnata’s customer-oriented teams handled over 710,000 aircraft turns, moved over 2.7 million tonnes of cargo, uplifted 111.4 million meals, and recorded a total transaction value (TTV) of travel services of US$ 1.9 billion.

Corporate,Ground Handling,Cargo,Catering,Singapore,Australia,Switzerland,Netherlands,Philippines,Pakistan,UAE,Travel

The partnership will see Blue Aqua upcycle organic waste from dnata’s catering and ground handling operations into alternative insect protein for aquafeeds.

Blue Aqua’s innovative bioconversion solution processes underutilized nutrients from the leftovers that can be transformed into quality insect proteins for aquacultural use. The bioconversion is a virtuous circle that makes the insect protein a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional fishmeal.

Compared to traditional protein, insect protein is a sustainable solution with low land, water, and carbon footprint, offering a very high yield. The partnership will supply Singapore’s farmers with sustainable access to domestically produced animal feed, which is traditionally imported.

The MoU is the starting point to a deeper partnership between Blue Aqua and dnata, which will look into the development and implementation of a ‘Zero Waste’ master plan. The air services provider will also add Blue Aqua to its list of suppliers to purchase locally farmed seafood for its catering operations.

Dirk Goovaerts, dnata’s Regional CEO for Asia Pacific, said: “We are delighted to partner with Blue Aqua to further decrease food waste and support the local food production supply chain. This initiative will help us minimise our environmental footprint whilst delivering the highest value for our customers and the communities around us.”

Dr Farshad Shishehchian, CEO & Founder of Blue Aqua International Group, said: “Blue Aqua has been a strong advocate for sustainable and practical farming since its inception, this partnership with dnata is a perfect fit. We are excited to grow our efforts in food technology to develop a circular economy in aquaculture globally through our network, starting with Singapore.”

The global population is expected to reach 9.9 billion by 2050, and food production has to increase by 70% to fulfil this demand. This is further implicated by food security concerns worldwide and the rapid degradation of valuable farmland. Waste management is a global issue that governments and companies are racing to solve. Singapore imports more than 90% of its food, yet, its food waste amounts to 744,000 tonnes annually. Today, less than 20% of Singapore’s food waste is recycled.

Blue Aqua’s Waste-to-Protein Program aspires to significantly reduce food waste across Singapore’s food supply chain through aquaculture. This is in line with Singapore’s vision of being a ‘Zero Waste Nation’, which means the recycling rate has to be increased to 70%. Singapore has also set a “30 by 30” goal, aiming to have the nation produce 30% of its food domestically by 2030. With this mandate, aquaculture will play an important role in the future of Singapore's food security. However, local farms still rely heavily on imported feed and raw materials, which the program is aiming to mitigate.

Contact
Gabor Vasarhelyi, Public Relations, dnata
gabor.vasarhelyi@dnata.com

Nathalie Lim, VP (Marketing), Blue Aqua
nathalie@blueaquaint.com

About dnata

dnata is one of the world’s largest air and travel services providers. Since the start of the pandemic, air cargo has transported millions of personal protective equipment (PPE), pharmaceuticals and perishables across the globe. It has become increasingly crucial for both airlines and freight forwarders to be supported by an accredited pharmaceutical ground handler like dnata to ensure the efficient handling of all types of life-saving vaccines coming through the air cargo supply chain.

Accreditation

dnata is one of the leading cargo handlers in Australia and Singapore that invested in processes and equipment to obtain certification from the industry’s top associations. dnata Australia is proud to be the only cargo handler in the country with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Good Distribution Practices (GDP) certification. dnata Singapore holds the IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Pharma accreditation.
The company’s operational processes for exporting and importing air cargo, including transitional warehousing, biosecurity, customs clearance and distribution of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and healthcare industry related materials, follow strict compliance and controlled guidelines.

Partnerships and Industry Memberships

dnata values the importance of partnerships and industry membership:

• dnata is a global member of Cargo IQ and the checkpoints provided is integrated with temperature visibility.

• dnata is a global member of Pharma.Aero, a cross-industry collaboration for Pharma Shippers, CEIV certified cargo communities, Airport Operators and other air cargo industry stakeholders. In Singapore and Australia, dnata is in the process of working with airline partners to implement global pharma tracking, in partnership with Pharma.Aero and Nallian, the world’s first provider of an open app ecosystem and data-sharing platform, to provide real-time end to end temperature visibility. The technology will enable all responsible parties in the value chain to view real-time non-conformances; therefore, any potential cool chain issue can be rectified before pharmaceutical and medical air cargo is compromised.

• dnata Singapore recently joined the Singapore Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (SAPI) to further align with the industry.

• dnata partnered with Unilode Aviation Solutions, the global leader in outsourced Unit Load Device (ULD) management, by installing blue tooth tracking technology on all ULD’s for real-time visibility across our stations in Singapore and Australia.

• dnata works with shippers, forwarders, and airlines to ensure the active use of Envirotainers (RAP’s & RKN’s) to build an effective cool chain solution from shipper to the receiver.

Cool Dollies

To ensure and prepare for the uncompromised integrity of pharmaceutical and perishables in the air cargo supply chain throughout end-to-end distribution, dnata has invested in the manufacturing of cool dollies in both Australia and Singapore. These new dollies, specially designed to serve the ever-growing pharmaceuticals industry, will make dnata the first handling company in both countries to offer a temperature-controlled solution for the transportation of temperature-sensitive goods between the dnata Coolchain Centre and an aircraft. The introduction of a cool dolly service later in the year will provide the peace of mind to pharmaceutical and medical manufacturers as well as health authorities that no other regional cargo handler can currently offer.

Cool Chain Facilities

Building on the importance of e-learning, dnata has refreshed its internal Learning Management System - My Learning Zone, which is gradually being rolled out to the various stations across the company's network. The digital platform supports dnata’s efforts to provide a more structured learning pathway for the employees through a competency development roadmap. Not only does it enhance learning and its effectiveness via engagement and mobile learning, but it also allows the company to track staff capabilities and compliance that also provides customers with additional reassurance.

In Australia, interactive multi-media technology has been used to transfer traditional face-to-face learning into remote delivery formats. This has enabled training to be facilitated across state borders and ports, alleviating the need for travel and the impacts of social distancing restrictions. In one initiative, a trainer in Adelaide delivered a program to several learners in Brisbane. The learners where able to view the training from their home or local workplace. Other training initiatives in Australia have focussed on the cross-skilling and re-skilling of team members to move from COVID impacted business areas to those areas with higher operational demand. Where possible, this training has been delivered using the existing e-learning platform.

At dnata in the Philippines, learning does not stop during the pandemic either. In exceptional cases where face-to-face training cannot be eliminated, dnata continues to conduct training without compromising the safety of staff by strictly observing established safety protocols. As at other stations across the network, dnata has moved a considerable degree of training to internet-based learning, which has proven to be effective.

Dirk Goovaerts, Regional CEO Asia Pacific, dnata, said: “It has been encouraging to witness the positive spirit of our people, especially the older workforce embracing technology in their learning journey and going out of their comfort zone to ensure we remain relevant and agile during the road to recovery.”

Singapore,Ground Handling,Australia,Philippines

Cooperating closely with government authorities, customers and suppliers, the company’s dedicated teams have worked around the clock to make a difference by ensuring smooth and safe turnaround of repatriation flights, handling essential cargo, supporting industries facing a labour shortage, launching innovative new products and services as well as donating high-nutrition meals to organisations and individuals in need.

Gary Chapman, President of dnata, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption to the travel and aviation industries. dnata is not immune. Like our customers and competitors, we are also facing serious challenges and working hard to recalibrate our business and operations for what, right now, is an uncertain future. Despite this extraordinary operating environment, we must stay focussed on delivering the promises we made and continually creating value for our customers and the communities around us.

“Over the past few months, we have adapted our operations and processes to the new normal, enhanced our existing services, and launched new ones to meet changing demand. This has all been achieved thanks to the team of talented colleagues across our businesses, who live and breathe dnata’s promise to deliver quality and safe services for our customers and their customers.”

Although flights have been dramatically reduced globally, dnata’s ground and passenger handling teams have continued to help airline partners deliver on special missions across the globe. From London to Manila and Dubai, the company’s dedicated employees have helped thousands of families reunite by handling more than 2,600 repatriation flights between March-July. With health and safety being dnata’s number one priority, all employees have been thoroughly trained on updated protocols, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the application of social distancing across airport operations.

dnata has also continued to support airlines in maintaining global trade and the flow of essential goods by delivering best-in-class cargo services. dnata’s teams have handled over 67,000 tonnes of PPE, life-saving medical supplies and pharmaceuticals over the past four months. At each of its 46 cargo stations, dnata has been using the latest technology, best practices and certified warehouses to ensure that every pharma and vaccine shipment is handled in compliance with the highest international standards.

In response to the strong air cargo market demand for the rapid, reliable and efficient transportation of essential commodities, several airlines have introduced additional cargo capacity by using passenger aircraft with seats fully or partially removed from the cabin. To adapt to changing customer needs, dnata has enhanced services, improved processes and trained employees to safely and efficiently handle passenger planes carrying cargo only. In Australia, Pakistan and the UK, dnata’s professionally trained staff achieved remarkable milestones by loading record amounts of up to 71 tonnes of cargo onto airline customers’ passenger aircraft.

dnata has also enhanced its aircraft cabin cleaning services to ensure the highest possible level of safety on board its customers’ flights. The new process involves extensive cleaning with a stronger disinfectant, and includes a comprehensive wipedown of all surfaces – from windows, tray tables, seatback screens, armrests, seats, in-seat controls, panels, air vents and overhead lockers in the cabin to lavatories, galleys and crew rest areas. The on-board cleaning chemicals are approved by the relevant authorities and proven to kill viruses and germs. They leave a long-lasting protective coating against new contamination of viruses, bacteria and fungi on surfaces, and are eco-friendly. A dedicated quality team and shift managers oversee the cleaning on the majority of flights.

In addition, dnata has launched innovative new products and services across its global operations to help airlines and passengers navigate the new normal. The company has added thermal screening, baggage disinfection and even home COVID-testing services to its offering at various locations around the world.

Operating over 60 state-of-the-art facilities, dnata has significant capacity to provide safe, quality catering services to industries in need. Since the COVID-19 outbreak began, dnata’s catering team has adapted its catering products and services in line with demand, and increased its capability to serve health and aged-care industries to support relief efforts alongside local authorities. In several countries, dnata delivers meals for quarantine facilities, looking after those who have to compulsorily isolate.

dnata’s skilled workforce has also taken on new roles to support communities. In Singapore and Australia the company has partnered with authorities and companies to temporarily redeploy employees to organisations in industries facing a labour shortage. To date, over 400 dnata employees have been trained and started working in other organisations.

dnata has remained committed to giving back to communities globally. The company teamed up with authorities, organisations and partners to provide ingredients, meals and packaged goods to local communities in need. To date, more than 200,000 wholesome meals have been donated to various organisations in Australia, Ireland, Italy and the UK to enable them to support those who need it the most.

Ground Handling,Corporate,Cargo,Catering,Australia,Singapore,UK,USA

With migrant workers unable to use communal kitchens due to dormitory lockdowns from April, dnata stepped up and leveraged their catering facilities, firing up their kitchens to plan, cook and deliver over 2.5 million high-nutrition meals to workers in residences across the island to date.

In order to deliver this challenge within a short timeframe, the catering team adapted various production elements ranging from preparing special menus in line with specific dietary requests to adapting the supply chain and redeploying staff from other business units. New processes were implemented or had to be modified to make the switch from traditional airline food preparation, which is stored and reheated on board, to fresh meals to be enjoyed immediately after delivery. dnata’s Food Quality Assurance team was involved every step of the way to ensure the highest food safety standards.

The successful delivery showcased adaptability, resilience and teamwork, which was praised by the local authorities.
<pp:caseid>348639</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
Singapore, 7 July 2017 – dnata Singapore has opened a new maintenance base at Singapore Changi Airport, which was officially inaugurated by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport, Mr Khaw Boon Wan. The new 6,900 square meter maintenance base is located next to the dnata Cargo Centre within the Changi Airfreight Centre and has the capacity to handle an average of more than 9,000 repairs and maintenance activities annually.

</pp:summary>

The new maintenance base has many advantages over the current facility, which commenced operations over 36 years ago. The new facility boasts an additional 1,000 square meters of space and is equipped with new equipment and technology that will triple its handling capacity. dnata Singapore’s current fleet of more than 320 motorized and 1,200 non-motorized ground service equipment (GSE) will be serviced at the new maintenance base.

“In an effort to future proof our business, it’s crucial that our infrastructure and support services keep up with the growth of dnata Singapore’s business. To maintain the standards that our customers have come to expect from us, this new maintenance base is important in ensuring that our fleet of GSE runs smoothly and efficiently,” said Mark Edwards, Chief Executive Officer of dnata Singapore. “We need to keep up with increased pressure on our equipment and find innovative and resource-light ways to repair and maintain our GSE, as their use goes up. With this new facility, I believe we can meet the increased demand seamlessly.”

The new maintenance base is planned to accommodate the current volume of maintenance and repair work with space for future expansion, with 66 per cent increase in work pit, 53 per cent increase in repair bays, 50 per cent increase in washing bays spaces. Flow is also an important factor to reduce congestion of GSEs constantly moving in and out of the maintenance base. The maintenance base also has new features such as underground diesel tanks with dispensing pumps, high overhead cranes with bigger capacity to handle all types of equipment, a dumb waiter lift for spare part movement to maximize storage space and increase productivity and a centralized oil dispensing and collecting system. This new technology will increase efficiency of staff working on repairing the equipment to decrease the downtime.

“In our current time, being environmentally responsible is no longer a matter of choice, and it was a clear priority for us when establishing this base, to look at building in as many energy saving measures. As Changi Airport has made its green commitment, we also want to be prepared. To start with, we are introducing fast charging bays for electric tractors, and will soon introduce more green technology and equipment,” added Mark.

The facility’s other green initiatives include - energy saving-LED lights and motion sensors for lights and ventilation. Additionally, the facility has an eco-friendly design which takes into account wind direction – Workshop Entry Bays have been made larger with higher ceilings to accommodate larger equipment types and face the direction where there are significant winds to keep the facility well ventilated and ensure that the equipment are also kept cool. Taking thermal radiation into account, the building windows are southwards facing, avoiding much of the afternoon sun to prevent the building from heating up. Windows are shaded to reduce internal room temperature, and conserve energy and electrical consumption. Higher and wider Vehicle Bay Entrances have been designed to allow more daylight into the workshop, eliminating the need of 24/7 repair bay lighting.

Minister Khaw said, "Changi Airport is a complex organisation with many service partners. While airlines and immigration counters provide direct contact with travellers, many more work behind the scenes to jointly deliver the Changi Experience, such as food caterers, luggage handlers, cleaners and repair mechanics. There are many such unsung heroes and heroines whose services passengers often take for granted. dnata is one such partner.

Among many initiatives, they have been working closely with us to raise productivity and operational efficiency. We are therefore delighted with dnata’s new investment for its ground handling operations. It will enhance the delivery of its services, thus contributing to the Changi Experience."

Singapore, 23 June 2016 – dnata Singapore has been awarded the Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certification by the Singapore Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for Coolchain - its pharmaceutical handling services at the company’s perishable and pharmaceutical handling facility. After Amsterdam, Singapore is the second station in the global dnata network to achieve the GDP certification.

GDP is a program focused on systems for warehouses and distribution centers that stores and distribute products that are medicinal or carry active pharmaceutical ingredients. With the pharmaceutical sector being highly regulated, the GDP certification ensures that Coolchain is in compliance with best distribution and handling practices.

The certification means that pharmaceutical products that come through Coolchain are not compromised in their handling. Coolchain has the technology to facilitate the independent adjustment of the temperature in each holding room to suit the needs of the product. Temperature-sensitive products like pharmaceuticals are also given priority loading and unloading to ensure that they are moved quickly with minimised temperature fluctuation. The handling team at Coolchain also receives specialised training for the handling of such niche products.

Mark Edwards, Chief Executive Officer of dnata Singapore says, “As pharmaceuticals continue to be a big trend in air freight we prepared ourselves ahead of time when we officially opened Coolchain in 2013. The facility was built with the intention of incorporating and using the latest technology to ensure the highest quality supply chain management when handling time- and temperature-sensitive cargo like pharmaceuticals. The GDP certification is the acknowledgement of the high standards of our handling processes in Coolchain so that airlines and agents know that their precious cargo is well taken care of.”

Working with an independent assessor and consultancy, Exelsius, Coolchain was audited for a consistent quality management system fit within the entire supply chain - from the delivery of raw materials to the manufacturing plants, to the final shipment of finished products to the end user. Coolchain processes were measured against international GDP requirements to ensure alignment with GDP guidance. Exelsius performed extensive work with the Coolchain handling team to develop the Pharmaceutical Handling Quality Manual, Standard Operating Procedure Manuals and Work Instructions. dnata Singapore and Coolchain are found to be compliant with HSA's strict GDP Standard and being awarded this prestigious certification in June 2016.

dnata Singapore moves more than 250,000 tonnes of cargo a year. Additionally, since the opening of Coolchain, we also move more than 25,000 tonnes of perishable and pharmaceutical cargo annually. The company is now preparing for CEIV certification.

Globally, dnata operates in 75 countries across six continents and is one of the world's largest air services providers offering ground handling, cargo, travel, and flight catering. Established in 1959, dnata ensures the aviation industry operates smoothly and efficiently in 129 airports across the Middle East, Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and South America.

Ground Handling,Singapore

DUBAI, U.A.E., & Singapore, 17 November 2015: Passengers departing from Changi International Airport Terminal 1 will have a new premium lounge option when dnata opens its doors to its pan-Asian, Singapore-influenced lounge today.

Located at the Transit Area of Terminal 1, the lounge can seat more than 200 passengers within its 860 square meter footprint. Facilities include a dedicated dining area, generous shower and toilet facilities, a branded coffee and cocktail bar, fully equipped work zones, and a dedicated AV lounge. Airline customers that offer lounge access to their passengers at dnata’s Terminal 1 lounge are Cathay Pacific, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Delta, Finnair, Air Asia, Air Mauritius, Bangkok Airways, Drukair, and Myanmar Airways International.

Mark Edwards, Chief Executive Officer, dnata Singapore, believes that the air travel experience is about more than just the in-flight journey. He says transitional customer touch-points such as airport lounges are increasingly important and contribute to shaping a positive and pleasant travel experience. “dnata’s new Terminal 1 lounge is a premium product designed to exceed the expectations of travellers when flying out of one of the world’s top airports. Our airline customers and their passengers took time to tell us what they wanted to see in a new lounge and we listened. Travellers today are increasingly sophisticated and we have incorporated many aspects of the feedback in our new lounge, from ease of access, selection of food and beverage to the all-important charging points for electronics,” says Mr. Edwards.

The new lounge reflects a pan-Asian theme, with subtle references to Singapore’s history and culture. Modern Peranakan-styled wall tiles, wallpaper and glass are used throughout the lounge and complement the Singaporean and Asian food offerings. A mixture of hard wood floors and carpets are used to reduce the ambient noise and the lounge adopts a ‘silent’ no-announcement policy to maintain a quiet environment.

Food is something that Singaporeans are passionate about and proud of. Keeping in mind the unique Singapore food culture, the executive chef at dnata Singapore has designed a menu that enables customers to sample local dishes such as laksa, satay and chicken rice, as well as more regional cuisine. Western meal options are also offered which reflects the diversity in customers and their tastes.

“The theme of the lounge is pan-Asian, and built around references to Singapore’s unique cuisine, history, architecture, and landmarks. My family and I came to Singapore nearly four years ago and we are still discovering this island. Singapore and Changi Airport have much to celebrate about their culture and heritage and we at dnata want to share what we love about this country with travelers that pass through dnata’s lounges,” says Mr. Edwards.

The culinary experience is further enhanced in a partnership with major international brands. A first for lounges at Changi, dnata is partnering with Hudson’s Coffee to introduce café-grade coffee machines, superior coffee beans, and baristas in the lounge during the morning hours. Those that want to enjoy a tipple before their flight can sample signature cocktails at the lounge mixed by a bartender during evening hours.

New sofa seating options offer individual and couples seating with improved comfort, while providing privacy to the passenger. The seating is equipped with universal power outlets and USB charging points for mobile phones, tablets and laptops. Complimentary high-speed WiFi is available throughout the lounge. Other features of the facility include five toilets and five showers with a dedicated facility for customers with reduced mobility. A new VIP room is also available exclusively for pre-bookings.

The new service equipment replacement parts facility, which will be run by Sage Parts, will dispense ground service equipment (GSE) replacement parts, manage inventories, and provide an extensive array of GSE support services. dnata Singapore will continue to provide maintenance services for its fleet of more than 1,000 GSE equipment.

The presence of Sage Parts within the dnata maintenance bay means that the supply chain is closer to where all the maintenance action happens. Having the right replacement parts on hand is important in keeping to the cycle of preventive maintenance for each GSE, especially when the equipment is heavily utilized by dnata Singapore to serve more than 30,000 flights annually at Changi Airport.

On bringing an expert in GSE replacement parts into an established ground handling operation in Singapore, Mark Edwards, Chief Executive Officer, dnata Singapore, says “dnata’s core strength in Singapore and around the world is providing a full suite of ground handling services – from passenger, ramp and cargo handling to inflight catering – to our airline customers. It is critical to do what we are good at and partnering with Sage Parts is a smart approach for both ourselves.

Finding the right fit was critical, and this meant that we had to understand both companies and its capabilities, and how partnering up could bring about benefits. We know what type of GSE is required to get a job done and how and when we need to maintain them to ensure that they are in the optimal condition for us to deliver quality service to our airline customers. Sage Parts brings to the table a level of expertise and experience on securing the right GSE replacement parts for us to maintain and service our GSE.”

The combination of expertise from Sage Parts, the world’s leading supplier of replacement parts for ground support equipment, and dnata Singapore means that the service equipment replacement parts facility and maintenance bay is now a one stop shop solution, providing the A to Z service requirements for the maintenance of GSEs.

With the aim of bringing GSE parts and services closer to the point of use, Mark Pollack, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sage Parts, says “Our customers around the world depend on Sage Parts for high quality GSE replacement parts, available rapidly to help them run their ground support operations more efficiently and to also enhance return on investment of their GSE equipment. The opening of our new facility in Singapore and working with dnata Singapore not only expands our geographic footprint in Asia, it represents our ongoing and continually expanding global commitment to provide replacement parts via state-of-the-art facilities strategically located onsite at airports, eliminating wait time for the delivery of parts while dramatically reducing the potential for costly equipment downtime.”

Ground Handling,Singapore

They turned to the Disney Institute – known for their excellent customer service training – for help.

As a result, every colleague has been shortlisted to attend a customised course.

The decision to partner with Disney was straightforward. The international media corporation is known for providing exceptional customer service and exceeding customer expectations.

Disney provides customised courses – adapting courses to meet dnata specific scenarios so our trainees can relate better to the situations they are presented with. Each course also establishes a base from which everyone can fine-tune their customer engagement skills.

The recognition received through awards and comments from customers are an additional testament to the efforts made by the Singapore team in improving their customer service.

Overall, the benefits of adopting regular training has a very positive track record both at dnata as a whole and for our airports independently. The awards and feedback from customers is a testament to Singapore’s efforts towards improving customer service.

At Changi Airport the results speak for themselves with a marked increase in the number of compliments received by dnata from airline customers and a 40% increase in compliments since the implementation of the Disney course in 2012.
